How Deep Should an Inground Pool Be?
Standard inground pool depth design for residential pools:
Shallow end: 3.5–4 feet. Comfortable for standing adults, appropriate for young children with supervision. Most pool steps and bench seating is at this depth.
Transition zone: Gradual slope from shallow to deep end over 6–10 feet of pool length.
Deep end: 5.5–6 feet is standard for most residential pools. This is sufficient for recreational diving from pool edge (not diving boards, which are largely discontinued in residential applications due to liability). 8 feet is required for diving boards; most municipalities in Chester County have restricted or prohibited residential diving boards.
Specialty depths:
- Play pools and family pools: 3.5–5 feet throughout (no deep end)
- Lap pools: consistent 4–4.5 feet
- Plunge pools: 5.5–6 feet throughout (compact footprint, full depth)
- Spa integration: 3–3.5 feet for integrated spa sections
JHL Pools designs pool depth profiles as part of the full design engagement — depth decisions are made in the context of how you'll use the pool, your household composition, and the property's topographic constraints.
