What Is a Gunite Pool?
A gunite pool is an inground swimming pool constructed using gunite — a dry-mix concrete sprayed at high velocity onto a steel rebar framework. Gunite (dry-mix) is applied through a hose where water is added at the nozzle, creating a dense, reinforced concrete shell that is shaped to any design and cured in place.
Gunite pools are distinguished from fiberglass pools (factory-molded shells) and vinyl liner pools (flexible liner on a structured frame) by their permanence, design flexibility, and structural integrity. A properly built gunite pool is a permanent structure — as permanent as the foundation of your home.
The gunite construction process:
1. Excavation to pool dimensions
2. Steel rebar framework installation
3. Plumbing stub-outs
4. Gunite application (1 day)
5. 28-day cure period
6. Tile, coping, and surround installation
7. Interior plaster or aggregate finish application
8. Fill and mechanical commissioning
JHL Pools builds all custom pools using the gunite dry-mix process — the method we've found produces the most durable shell for Chester County and Delaware County's soil and climate conditions.
