Fiberglass vs. Gunite Pool — Which Is Right for Chester County?

The choice between fiberglass and gunite is one of the first decisions a homeowner faces when planning a pool project. The answer depends on budget, design goals, property conditions, and long-term ownership expectations. Here's an honest comparison.

Design Flexibility

Gunite: Unlimited. Any shape, depth, bench configuration, or contour. Vanishing edges, negative edges, integrated spas, swim-up bars — all possible with gunite. Fiberglass: Limited to manufacturer molds. Fiberglass pools come in factory-made shapes. Your pool choice is constrained to what a manufacturer offers.

Durability in Pennsylvania Climate

Gunite: Superior for Chester County. Gunite pools are engineered to the site's specific soil conditions. In Chester County's clay subsoil, we engineer gunite shells with additional rebar and drainage to manage hydrostatic pressure during freeze-thaw cycles. Fiberglass: Risk of hydrostatic pop. In clay-heavy soil, fiberglass shells can be pushed upward by hydrostatic pressure — particularly after periods of heavy rain followed by freezing. This is a known issue in our market and one of the primary reasons JHL Pools does not build fiberglass pools.

Installation Timeline

Fiberglass: 3-6 weeks from excavation to water. Gunite: 8-16 weeks from excavation to water, depending on scope. If timeline is the primary constraint, fiberglass has an advantage — but in our market, that speed advantage often comes with long-term structural risk.

Cost

Fiberglass: $60,000–$100,000 for installed pool. Gunite: $85,000–$250,000+ depending on size, shape, and finish. Gunite's higher upfront cost is offset by longer structural lifespan and design value.
