What Is a Gunite Pool?
A gunite pool is a type of inground swimming pool constructed using gunite — a pneumatically applied dry-mix concrete. The pool's structure begins with a steel rebar framework that defines the shape, followed by the gunite application: dry cement and aggregate are fed through a hose and mixed with water at the nozzle as they are sprayed onto the rebar cage at high velocity. The result is a dense, reinforced concrete shell that can be shaped into any form the design demands.
Gunite vs. Shotcrete
Gunite and shotcrete are both pneumatically applied concrete, but the mixing method differs. Gunite uses the dry-mix process (mixed at the nozzle), while shotcrete uses the wet-mix process (pre-mixed before the hose). For residential pool construction in Pennsylvania's climate, the dry-mix gunite process produces a denser, lower water-to-cement ratio shell with superior freeze-thaw resistance — which is why JHL Pools uses gunite exclusively.
Gunite Pool Interior Finishes
- White plaster — The classic interior finish. Smooth, bright, and the lowest cost option. Replastering typically required every 10-15 years.
- Diamond Brite — Colored aggregate plaster with improved durability over standard white plaster. Wide color range.
- Pebble Tec / Pebble Sheen — Exposed pebble aggregate finish. The most durable interior surface, with lifespans of 20+ years. The luxury standard for Chester County and Main Line pools.
- Quartz aggregate — Quartz crystal embedded in plaster. Durable, smooth to the touch, available in a range of colors.
- Glass tile — Premium finish for vanishing-edge pools, spa interiors, and waterline accent tile.
