Pool Coping — What It Is and How to Choose
Pool coping is the capstone material installed on top of the pool's bond beam — the structural edge that separates the pool shell from the surrounding patio or deck surface. Coping serves three functions: it provides a safe, slip-resistant edge around the water; it directs splash water away from the pool shell and toward the deck drain; and it defines the visual transition between the pool and its surround.
Coping Materials
Pennsylvania bluestone. Thermally finished bluestone is the dominant coping material for West Chester and Chester County pool environments. Anti-slip surface, regional character, ages beautifully. Natural cleft finish available for a more textured aesthetic.
Travertine. The premium coping material for Newtown Square and Main Line pools. Travertine stays cooler underfoot than concrete in direct sun — a significant comfort advantage for families. Available in tumbled (anti-slip, softer look) or honed (smooth, contemporary) finish.
Brick. Traditional coping for Colonial and Victorian-architecture pools. Appropriate for Bryn Mawr and Haverford properties where the pool design draws from the home's architectural character.
Concrete pavers. Contemporary coping option for modern pool designs. Wide range of colors and formats. More prone to thermal expansion cracking at the pool edge than natural stone.
