Plunge Pool vs. Full-Size Pool — Which Is Right for Your Property?
Not every Chester County or Main Line property needs a 20x40 pool to get the most from an outdoor living investment. Here's an honest framework for deciding between a plunge pool and a full-size pool.
When a Plunge Pool Makes More Sense
Limited rear yard. If your usable rear yard is less than 2,500 sq ft, a full-size pool will dominate the space and leave little room for patio, kitchen, and planting. A plunge pool (typically 8x14 to 12x20) can be integrated into a more complete outdoor environment.
Hydrotherapy priority. If your primary use is soaking, cold plunge, and hydrotherapy rather than lap swimming or family recreational swimming, a plunge pool serves those needs at significantly lower cost and with less space impact.
Budget constraint. Plunge pools start around $45,000 vs. $85,000+ for a full-size gunite pool. For the same overall project budget, a plunge pool + full patio + outdoor kitchen often produces a more usable and visually complete environment than a full-size pool + minimal patio.
When a Full-Size Pool Makes More Sense
Family recreational swimming. Lap swimming, diving from pool edge, pool games, and large group entertainment all require the scale of a full-size pool.
Property size and investment level. Chester County estate properties and Main Line properties in Wayne and Gladwyne — where the outdoor investment should match the property's overall value — typically warrant full-size pools as the centerpiece of the outdoor environment.
Resale value. Full-size inground pools add more resale value than plunge pools in the Chester County market.
