Pool Fence & Safety Requirements in Pennsylvania
Pool safety is both a legal requirement and a parent’s peace of mind. Pennsylvania follows the International Residential/Swimming Pool Code for residential pools, and your township enforces it through the permit process. Here is what a new pool needs — confirm specifics with your local code office.
Barrier and Fence Basics
Residential pools generally require a barrier at least 48 inches high with no gaps a small child can pass through and no easy footholds. The barrier must surround the pool, and the house wall can serve as one side only with additional protections. We design the barrier into the project so it meets code and looks intentional.
Gates and Latches
Gates must be self-closing and self-latching, open outward away from the pool, and have the latch placed out of a young child’s reach. These details are checked at inspection, so they are not optional.
Alarms, Covers, and Extra Layers
Depending on the configuration, door alarms on house doors leading to the pool area, a power safety cover, and pool alarms add layers of protection — and a safety cover also simplifies winterization. We will walk through which apply to your design.
Permits and Inspection
Barrier compliance is part of the township permit and final inspection. As a local licensed builder (PA HIC #PA035784) we manage permitting and inspections across Chester, Delaware, and Montgomery County municipalities, so your pool passes the first time.
