What Is a Tanning Ledge?
A tanning ledge — also called a Baja shelf or sun shelf — is a shallow, flat area at the entry of a pool, usually 6–12 inches deep, for lounging, sunbathing, and young children.
What It Is
A tanning ledge (Baja shelf, sun shelf, or sun ledge) is a broad, shallow step built into the pool — typically 6–12 inches of water over a flat surface — where you can place a lounge chair partly in the water, let toddlers play safely, or simply cool off without fully swimming.
How People Use It
It is one of the most-requested features we build. Homeowners use it for in-water lounge chairs and side tables, as a safe play zone for young children, and as a sunny spot to relax. A submerged bubbler turns it into a playful, lit focal point.
Designing One In
Size it for one or two loungers, consider an umbrella sleeve for shade, and add a bubbler and lighting for effect. Because it changes the pool’s shape and plumbing, a tanning ledge is best designed into a new gunite pool from the start.
