How Chester County's Soil Affects Pool Construction

Chester County's soil isn't just dirt — it's a geologically specific material that has significant implications for how a pool must be built to last. Contractors from New Jersey or Philadelphia who work in our market without understanding Chester County soil build pools that fail. Here's what you need to know.

The Clay Problem

Most of Chester County sits on clay-rich subsoil derived from the decomposed Wissahickon schist and other Piedmont Plateau formations. Clay has two characteristics that matter for pool construction: it retains water, and it changes volume significantly as it wets and dries. A cubic foot of dry Chester County clay can expand 10-15% when saturated. That expansion exerts lateral pressure on anything in the ground — including pool walls.

Hydrostatic Pressure

Hydrostatic pressure is the pressure exerted by groundwater on a below-grade structure. After heavy rainfall in Chester County, the clay subsoil can become saturated and exert hydrostatic pressure on pool walls and floors. Pools not designed for this force — specifically, pools without proper drainage systems and adequate shell structural strength — can experience cracking, shifting, or in extreme cases, hydrostatic pop-up (the entire pool shell lifted out of the ground by groundwater pressure).

How JHL Pools Engineers for Chester County Soil

We address Chester County's soil conditions in three ways: (1) overexcavation to allow a drainage aggregate layer around the full shell perimeter; (2) structural rebar at closer spacing than code minimum (#4 at 12-inch vs. 18-inch standard); and (3) a drain tile system at the base of the shell that provides a positive outlet for groundwater. Every JHL Pools build includes all three.
